چکیده

Many species of yeasts exist in nature in haploid form. If strongly heterothallic, strains of such species produce no ascospores when tested individually. They do mate if sexually reactive strains of opposite sex are mixed on a sporulation medium. In 1952, L. J. Wickerham and K. A. Burton (J. Bacteriol. 63:449, 1952) reported that all strains of an imperfect form known variously as Dematium chodati Nechitch, Candida chodati Berkh., and Sporotrichum anglicum Cast. were capable of reacting with a tester of opposite sex. The perfect stage of this species was validated with a Latin description by J. Boidin et al. (Bull. Soc. Mycol. France 80:396, 1964), who gave it the name Pichia burtonii. The type selected, strain NRRL Y-1933, was isolated from pollen carried by a wild honeybee of a subfamily (Meliponinae) inhabiting tropical America. This strain was received at the Northern Laboratory in 1950 from Cyro G. Teixeira, Campanas, Brazil. This species is frequently isolated from silage and stored grain. Another haploid heterothallic yeast is the ubiquitous species Candida guilliermondii (Cast.) Lang. and Guerra. Sexually reactive strains comprised a minority of those tested (L. J. Wickerham and K. A. Burton, J. Bacteriol. 68:594, 1954). The characteristics of 16 sexually reactive strains are presented in the following description.

Biocontrol of mold growth in high-moisture wheat stored under airtight conditions by Pichia anomala, Pichia guilliermondii, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Pichia anomala inhibits the growth of Penicillium roqueforti and Aspergillus candidus on agar. In this investigation, antagonistic activity on agar against 17 mold species was determined. The abilities of Pichia anomala, Pichia guilliermondii, and Saccharomyces cerevisiae to inhibit the growth of the mold Penicillium roqueforti in nonsterile high-moisture wheat were compared by adding 10(3) Pen...

Molecular identification of Pichia guilliermondii, Debaryomyces hansenii and Candida palmioleophila

Traditional phenotypic methods and commercial kits based on carbohydrate assimilation patterns are unable to consistently distinguish among isolates of Pichia guilliermondii, Debaryomyces hansenii and Candida palmioleophila. As result, these species are often misidentified. In this work, we established a reliable method for the identification/differentiation of these species. Our assay was vali...

Debaryomyces hansenii (Candida famata), a rare human fungal pathogen often misidentified as Pichia guilliermondii (Candida guilliermondii).

Debaryomyces hansenii is a hemiascomycetous yeast commonly found in natural substrates and in various types of cheese. Pichia guilliermondii is widely distributed in nature and is a common constituent of the normal human microflora. Both species have been described in human infections but are extremely difficult to differentiate phenotypically. Thus, frequent errors in identification occur. The...

Mixture of Xylose and Glucose Affects Xylitol Production by Pichia guilliermondii: Model Prediction Using Artificial Neural Network

Production of several yeast products occur in presence of mixtures of monosaccharides. To study effect of xylose and glucose mixtures with system aeration and nitrogen source as the other two operative variables on xylitol production by Pichia guilliermondii, the present work was defined. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) strategy was used to athematically show interplay between these three c...

Spoilage yeasts in Patagonian winemaking: molecular and physiological features of Pichia guilliermondii indigenous isolates.

Yeasts belonging to the genus Dekkera/Brettanomyces, especially the species Dekkera bruxellensis, have long been associated with the production of volatile phenols responsible for off-flavour in wines. According to recent reports, the species Pichia guilliermondii could also produce these compounds at the initial stages of fermentation. Based on the abundance of P. guilliermondii in Patagonian ...
